VetSpark: The next generation of veterinary academic leaders

Thanks to generous support from Bernard Little, Jr. and his wife, Mary Jane Hunt, the VetSpark program launched in the fall of 2025 for UF Veterinary Hospital residents with the goal of preparing and inspiring the next generation of veterinary academic clinician scientists, educators and leaders.

About VetSpark

The two-year (24 months) professional development pathway program will provide meaningful research and educational mentorship to participants through five core, intentional pillars:

  • Research – Financial support for research, grant writing, scientific meeting and publication support
  • Teaching & Mentoring – Teaching/pedagogical training and support for educational conferences
  • Professional Skills – CV building, job search preparation and academic career navigation
  • Leadership – Exposure to academic governance and leadership roles
  • Career Wellness and Mentorship – Monthly cohort meetings and peer support

Program Requirements

  • Attendance at all monthly meetings
  • Approved research study
  • Local and national research meeting presentation
  • At least one peer-reviewed publication
  • Approved teaching activity
  • National education meeting attendance or presentation

  • Applications are due August 29, 2025. Notifications expected the week of September 22, 2025.
  • CV
  • Letter of intent, including reason for interest and career aspiration
  • Application form, including signature of support from program director or service chief
  • For second-year residents and fellows, a plan for integrating completion of the program with residency/fellowship requirements
